The Costa Maya Majahual Xcalak Chinchorro ![]() Chinchorro, Legendary Atoll A short boat trip across a deep channel is "Chinchorro" (18 miles offshore from the Costa Maya), the largest coral atoll in the Americas. This circular underwater reef system offers some 240 square miles of coral reef and a shallow reef lagoon with three sets of keys scattered over its surface. Chinchorro is the Costa Maya's greatest diving attraction. Spectacular coral formations and abundant marine life aside, Chinchorro offers divers excitement few other reefs can match: it is a ships' graveyard. The sea floor around Chinchorro is littered with the wrecks of vessels that have floundered on the corals over the centuries. Divers can explore Spanish galleons and the rusting hulks of modern cargo ships. Sea Turtles are spotted on nearly every dive and dolphins are frequently seen on the boat ride over from the mainland. The reefs of Chinchorro are as spectacular as any other diving destination in this hemisphere. |
