About Cozumel Island

The island of Cozumel is a dream destination for nature lovers, divers, shoppers and for those who just want to relax and enjoy the Mexican Caribbean. It is 10 miles wide and 28 miles long,Cozumel Island, Mexico making it Mexico's largest island, and has only one town called San Miguel on the west side of the Island. The island is just 12 miles from the coast of the Yucatan Penisula.

The island became famous in 1961 when explorer-extraordinaire Jacques Cousteau produced a documentary about Cozumel's glorious sea life. However the island has been populated since 300 AD, when during the Mayan post-classic period, Cozumel thrived as a trade center and a ceremonial site. Ancient Mayan ruins can still be found scattered about the island. And though they didn't leave behind architecture, the island was also a refuge for notorious pirates such as Jean Lafitte and Henry Morgan.

Today the island really does offer something for everybody. People come from around the world to scuba dive and snorkel Cozumel's reefs. Cruise ships bring day travelers to enjoy the shopping, food, and beautiful beaches. The island offers traditional Mexican small town charm yet with modern day infrastructure and amenities. Cozumel boasts great restaurants, grocery stores, a movie theater and a golf course. The international airport hosts daily flights from the US via American, Delta and Continental airlines.
