Getting to the Yucatan

Weekly Regular Flights from Houston

Continental Airlines flies from Houston, Texas (HOU) direct, non-stop to Merida (MID) on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Arrival from Cancun

Flying into Cancun and taking a bus to Merida is also possible. The best bus lines servicing Cancun-Merida are UNO, ADO, and ADO-GL. These bus lines are first class, air conditioned with a bathroom and TVs. The bus ride between Cancun and Merida costs around US$20-US$25 and takes between 3 and 4 hours. The length of the trip depends if the trip is non-stop or with a stop at the Valladolid rest area.

If you are going to rent a car and drive it is important to know that Highway 18 to Merida is a toll road, also called a "cuota" or "carretera de cobro". This four-lane speedway is by far the fastest route from one side of the peninsula to the other. Using it, you can avoid 83 topes and 43 villages. Along the way, you will encounter toll booths or "casetas de cobro". Expect to pay $24 USD between Merida and Cancun. It is best to have pesos because the exchange rates at the toll booths are less than generous.
